First of all the people that I have met so far. There was the doctor from mass, there was a nice Australian couple. There were three co-ed’s from England, another group of guys from Australia and a bunch of people from the states. NYC, LA, and others. The Marriott tends to attract a lot of Americans… I think I need to branch out.
Today was hot. I sweat a lot, but I did the hop-on hop-off thing again. I hopped off at St. Peters Square and climbed MANY steps to the copula. It was the very top of the cathedral and the steps were the nastiest steps I have ever stepped on. You have to see those pictures. The wall in the stairway are actually tilted and the last set of steps actually have a vertical rope hanging acting as a hand rail… it was cool. Going down on the ancient steps… if you slipped, you would keep falling a very long time. One of the American, Marriott people told us on the bus that some woman actually had two inch heels doing this… not to smart!
After some refreshments I hopped back on the bus and had to do the Coliseum. I did the audio tour so I could move up in the line. The audio tour was not good. It was not clearly marked; it took me forever to find the steps. Oh well, it was pretty cool.
I was really smart today. I geo-tagged the picture of where the bus dropped us off. This way I was actually able to find it all by my self… good thing because there is no one here to help :>
I booked my train to Pisa using the kiosk, I took the metro several time and did not get lost once. I am going to Pisa tomorrow at 13:00. I took the faster train. I am not sure if I will stay overnight or not. I found a small hotel 400 meters from the tower so it is an option. I still am not sure how to get from Pisa to Barcelona via ferry. I like the ferry for some reason.
I was goofing off and watching volleyball in the lounge and not blogging… oops…
Time to pack and drag all of my stuff around tomorrow. I am not sure if I will sight see or maybe hang at the pool for a while… tough call…

July 12th, 2010Roma 2010-07-12
July 12th, 2010So I made it to Bari. My trip was supposed to continue at 2:00pm, but no. It is at 5:00 tonight. I had a great cabin on the ferry and I have been hanging out with Jodi from NYC. Everything is closed on Sunday except the grocery store. We got food and drink there and hung out in the park.
The train from Bari to Rome takes 6 hours… I am pretty sure I am on the correct train, but I could swear it was going the other way before I fell asleep… Jodi told me about a thing called couch surfing… I think I will check it out after my stay at the Roman Marriott… save a bunch of money and meet some new people.
The hotel in Rome is awesome even though it is WAY out of the way. Next time I will look at a map before I book. Two days in Rome and then to Pisa and then Barcelona. There are some high-speed trains that should help… we will see…
Good morning (for me) it is time to figure out Roma… at least it won’t be Greek. I am going to start with the hop-on hop off tour again… I like them.

Greece 2010 0707
July 7th, 2010So the hop-on hop off thing worked out pretty well. We hopped on in the beginning. We know where it was because we scouted it out yesterday. It turns out that there are two companies operating the exact same line with very similar double-decker red busses… confusing. We got our bus, cruised thought the VERY crowded Athens streets watching the scooters and motorcycles zip through traffic, splitting lanes and rushing to the front at every light. That should be allowed in CT!
We hopped off at the Museum and spent the next 3 hours going through the place… Lauren feels the need to take a picture of EVERY SINGLE EXHIBIT!!! I am go to send her with my father, I think they do museums at the same pace… note to self, make sure that any potential partners have the same museum speed!!! Otherwise that could be trouble.
We finished up the museum and decided we needed to stop at FastFerries so that I could actually figure out my second leg of the great European tour. Some would say that this should be figured out already, but heh! Anyway, I have to go to the train station to activate my pass to be able to book my ferry to Bari Italy and then I can book a discount tour of the Greek islands for Lauren and I… complicated. First I need to find the train station, then activate the pass, then go back to FastFerries and THEN I can book everything… simple :<
It is also time to attempt to piece together at least the first couple of stops on the tour. So far, I know that I am going to take a train (from the station that I don’t know where is) from Athens to Patras where I have to find the port and then get a ferry to Bari. Then I need to get a train from Bari to Rome and find a place to sleep… I think I need a spreadsheet… Excel is running as I type… There is going to be some serious layover time I am thinking… but hey its an adventure after all!!! And I have an android phone that WON’T navigate in Greece, what up with that!??!?!
Greece 2010 07-06
July 7th, 2010Tuesday July 6… Jet lag
So, when it is 11:00am here it is only 4:00am body time… we should have set the alarm. Yup we were going to get an early start to the day and do the “hop-on-hop-off” bus and do some serious touristing, but alas we woke at 11:11 am… change of plans. We are going to go into the center of Athens and get a phone, a money clip, sun screen, and a visor. My visor did not seem to make it into my suitcase… those people who pack ahead of time may have a good idea… They want 19Euro a day for internet access, what’s up with that. Hopefully my phone will get me that. Also there are a bunch of hot-spots…
I found out that the ferry from Greece to Italy might actually be included in my rail-pass, sweet… now I just have to figure everything else out… yes, it’s all Greek to me…
We went to Athens center to see where the bus was and the market… we ended getting a phone that took forever. Then we ended up walking to the Parthenon and the Acropolis and having a bunch of good food.
The hotel is very nice, but it cost 19e for internet access, what up with that?!?!?!
Greece 2010 Day 1
July 5th, 2010So, my job is done… I have nothing to keep me home.. That does not mean I need to miss my flight… we came close… it was my fault. I forgot my train pass!!! We had to go back for it… when we got to the airport, they actually called us by name at the gate… oopps, but we made it. Then we flew to DC… we hung out at the restaurant and talked to some woman that was in the military…. We made that flight just fine… off to Germany… and then maybe Athens. Travel is kinda fun… Our transfer did not show up… :< So we took a cab, no big deal. The hotel is awesome. We have a view of the Acropolis and the Parthenon. The pool is great. We took a bit of a nap when we arrived. The time is a little off. It is 6 hours earlier here. I checked on our tour bus and the hotel shuttle will take us right to it. I think we can just hope on anywhere but we will see. It goes right by all the places we want to see. I have to get lauren out of bed in the morning so we can make the most of it… it will be a long day. We are going to hang out at the pool and then get some greek food to eat. There are 5 restaurants in the hotel…. Tomorrow we will sample the local cuisine..
2009-05-19 Chitzinitza
May 20th, 20092009-05-19 Chitzinitza
So we yesterday we traveled across the world and today we are going to travel across Mexico. The plan is to get up early, like 6:30 early, and spend 10 hours to tour Chitzinitza. Ralph and Doris (Marlo’s father and step mother) have planned the excursion. The word is that Ralph spent some time getting just the right tour… So we are to meet in the lobby at 7:50. We set the alarm and discuss and confirm that it is 7:50, not 6:50, etc… we get up EARLY and get a bite to eat. We are in the lobby where we were pretty sure where we were supposed to be. They are nowhere around… I ask if they are usually on-time people. Marlo senses something wrong. I now realize it is the same feeling we got doing the boat tour in Lake Titicaca. Well 7:50 has come and gone. No one has a clue. Marlo and I make sure that we can call each other’s cell phone and start to make a plan of how to proceed… poof there they are… I had worries of one more screw up on our part on this trip. It was not a good feeling. Turns out that the tour called and said that they would pick us up later…hmmmm
While we are waiting I talk to some people about Riviara Secret. It sounds interesting. The woman that performed the wedding said that it was awesome. The woman that was selling the tour said that she just took her daughters three days ago… we may have to go…
In the van we go. There are six of us from the hotels taking the van to the bus… the van to the bus you ask, how does that work. It works in a bit of an unsettling kind of way… the bus was sitting on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and our van met is. It felt like a hostage swap. It did not help that the tour director immediately started to identify Americans… ok, he was just working the crowd as to where everyone was from… I MAY be a little paranoid about the whole Mexico thing, maybe a little…. The fact that I am posting this after the fact give you a hint that things did not turn out terribly or anything, but we did drive by a Mexican jail… Marlo was nice enough to rip me out of a book-reading trance and show it to me…
So we get on this bus. It is nice. It is air conditioned. That is good!!! They give us some juice and a roll for breakfast. Our tour is to last 10 hours… yup, that is a LONG time. We are going to ride the bus for 3 hours, go swimming in a sink hole for a hour, lunch for an hour, drive another hour. Tour Chitzinitza for 3 hours and then drive back to the hotel for 3 hours… is that 10??? Well it was something like that. I have a book, so riding the bus doesn’t bother me. Marlo got board several time and required some amusement, but overall the ride to the sink hole was comfortable. But the tour guide went on for HOURS about every little thing in two languages and repeated himself over and over… ouch…
Now the sink hole was very cool. It is caused by the underground river wearing away the limestone to a point that the top collapses and leaves this deep cave like structure complete with a deep body of water that is still flowing. This particular sink hole has the added benefit of a tunnel carved in and around it to allow access to water level. Not only that but the continued the steps up around the edge to a height of 25-30 above water level. This is great for doing silly things like jumping high off the stairs into the water. Well of course I had to do that complete with pictures and what not. Jumping that high into water hurts the bottom of my feet. Marlo and Ralph jump from the stairs as well. It was fun. The water was temperate and clear and there was a bunch of fish swimming around. There was this girl at the top of the steps that kept wanting to jump, but never got up the nerve. I would try to help each time I went up to no avail. Others tried to convince her and even hold her hands… it dot not happen. A bunch of people were jumping from the top. A few even dove. Well this is all well and good until someone get hurt. This guy, John thought that diving off the top would be fun. He was also on the second day of his honeymoon. He had plans of scuba diving tomorrow and horse back riding and zip lining. Well all of that is at risk because he ripped his sholder out of joint diving off the top steps. Apparently when he landed the force of the water caught his arm just wrong and dislocated his shoulder. It took a while for everyone on bus 31 that we had a man down. He managed to get over to the ladder (that was a rung short) and just hold one. The man was in pain. He could not haul himself out of the water.
So now we have a full-fledged medical problem. Marlo told the “life guards” that there was a problem… they assisted in getting John out of the water and then stared at the situation. Some people were helpful, but the heroes of the day are John wife and Marlo. Now remember we are in the middle of Mexico somewhere and this guy may have to go to a Mexican hospital. Not as bad as the Mexican jail, but not a good plan either. So Marlo gets him to lie down on a towel and then his wife and Marlo give it everything they have to get this shoulder back to where it is supposed to me. Now john is not a small guy so moving shoulder joints around is not an easy task. I keep asking if I can help to really yank it, but Marlo says that would not be helpful. They give up and call an ambulance. Then they decide to give it another try with the wife wrapping a towel on one part of his arm and Marlo using another towel to yank a different direction. Now the wife is an orthopedic nurse and Marlo is a PA, so this is right up their alley… one bug shove and a twist from John and the shoulder is back in place!!!! Yea Marlo! We get him slung up best we can and start the long walk up all of the steps to the bus. We are supposed to be on the bus by noon. We are a little late already. The life guards called off the ambulance, but they came anyway. We got the man to the top and the emt’s were there. They gave him some meds and a proper sling. He continued the tour!!!
Lunch was next. It was an unspectacular buffet very like the one at Mochu Pichu. Also no drinks were included. Not even water. I thought drinks were $12. Turns out they were only $2.50… might have been pacos I was looking at.
Now, it has been 3 hours of bus, and hour of swimming (and medical attention), an hour of lunch and NOW we are off to Chitzinitza. It seems like we have been going all day… cuz we have!! We have actually been non-stop for two days… the good news is they have free beverages on the bus. So here we are. Touring and listening. Our guide, the same guy from the bus, does the same annoying and repetitive style of narration…. We learned a lot, but it was painful… we saw the ring stadium where they would watch people play to tell the future and unfortunately the future was sort for some because after the game they got sacrificed… bummer… then we learned all about the snake and the eagle and the jaguar and how they all fit into Mayan culture… we toured and toured… then we got to the pig guy. The pyramid. You have all see it, it is cool, BUT you can no longer climb the steps!!! Major bummer. I climb everything!!! Actually since four years about they have roped off all of the ruins. You are not allowed to walk on any of them!!! I was not happy about this. I wanted to simply walk under the rope and prance (ok, maybe stomp would be better) right up those steps!!! What would they do, it’s not a big deal… then the two words came into my brain…. Mexican Jail. People have been telling me my whole life that if I went to Mexico I would end up in a Mexican jail. We I ruled out the big steps (although I did not see any policia) but the whole natural treasure and what not won over for the most part.. there was a few minor rope infractions. I even got Doris and Ralph to climb under once… we did not get arrested…
Every 5 feet there was someone trying to sell us cloth patches, mask and carvings, and obsidian knives… I almost bought the knife… it was hot. We saw a really big iguana. It was getting late and we were getting tired. My peeps wanted to go to the bus as soon as it opened… I think it was the beer and the AC that drew them in… who am I to argue…
The ride back was uneventful; I finished the book that I had started at the beginning of the bus ride… we asked if we were going to take a van back to our hotel or would the bus take us. The question was quite clear, but this is a foreign land so the 50-50 rule apples (1/2 of what you say, they don’t understand, and half of what they say, you don’t understand. It takes 4 iterations to actually get an accurate answer). He told us that the bus would take us to the hotel. Then we stopped shortly after to meet the van that would take us to the hotel.
We got back, showered cleaned up and met Ralph and Doris for dinner… nope we had not gotten sick of each other. We actually had a quite pleasant time.
We ate a Tapaz. Lots of little dishes. Very nice. And considering we are at ground 0 of the big pig fly, we had the restaurant almost to our selves. We had bread, potato something, empanadas (not like the Puru ones), and beef and chicken on a stick (we really liked that so we got more), then pasta, and a few other things. We should not have ordered more meat. I thought it was almost the last course… it was not. We were stuffed… then there was desert… the beer and wine glasses never emptied and we stayed there until almost 10:00. After that… we crashed… hard…

We made it…
May 18th, 2009So we get up way early in attempt to actually get on our flight… we manage, we should be good at this by now. The flights are uneventful. There was some really pretty water, and a huge rainstorm that we flew into as we were landing.
The room is AWESOME! The place is great, we made the wedding…. More details later. We are going to Chitzinitza tomorrow. We heard that you can’t climb it anymore… bummer… lots of pics to come..

Mexico take two…
May 18th, 2009Mexico take two…
The first attempt ended in utter failure… ya see, I picked up the travel docs, our travel agent pointed out that we got the later flight that Marlo wanted. 2:40… that works… so we are cruising to the airport all fat dumb and happy around 12:30. Plenty of time for a 2:40 flight. So I am in the back seat, Mr. Roller was kind enough to drive us to the airport…. I decide to read more of these travel docs, see cuz these are our second set because the first plan fell about due to the pig thing… so we are about half way to the airport and I read that our RETURN flight was at 2:40, not our departure flight… that was at 6:55, we were about 8 hours late… major ooops… so now what… we continue to the airport to see what is available… nada… we have to go home and wait for the next day… much unhappiness… we missed the rehearsal dinner and a day in Mexico that we paid for… the USAir people did NOT help much, they did change our flight for free, but would not change the end date. Our hero Ann at AAA handled all of the heavy lifting and got everything straightened out.
Paris in Summary
March 13th, 2009Paris in summary…
The flight over was not bad at all, but I don’t really mind sitting for seven hours… the immigration and passport processing was very fast. Considering we got there at 6:30 in the morning, that may have helped… we went right out and got on the Air France bus. I am not sure who, but I think someone told us about it. Then we looked it up. Regardless, it worked out well. Marlo even bought round trip tickets so we did not have to wait when we went back to the airport. I was in charge of those :>
Getting around was pretty easy. We figured out the metro, which is very clean and efficient.
We did all of the Paris things, Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, La Louvre, the Arc D’ Triumph, the Champs Elysian, a cruise on the Seine, fine dining, a jazz club, and a cabaret show… when we were done, we were ready to go home to the good old U S of A.
The hotel was very nice and big especially for a European hotel. The lobby was very Pari, the location was great once we figured out a few things. Right across the street, there was a whole mall and downstairs was a grocery store and a deli!
Eating was a bit of a challenge though. We had the language thing to deal with. Many places had menu’s in English as well. The last place we ate was really good. Some roasted duck, some beef, a bottle of wine and some flaming desserts!
Paris – 100% success!!!
Paris 4
March 13th, 2009Things are already beginning to blur, what we did what day. This blogging thing is a bit of a chore, but I want to do it and I know that there are a couple of people out there that appreciate it…
So we saw the arc. Actually we see the arc all of the time because we are staying right down the road from it. It is 200 feet tall, but we still lose track of it. There are tall buildings with narrow streets, so you can’t see far. There are also tiny, tiny, tiny cars everywhere. As Marlo haphazardly crosses streets she is not even scared of them. It seems as if they would jus fall over and give up if they hit you :>
So, we walked our butts all the way over to the Eiffel Tower. It is a lot bigger up close, but then again, what isn’t … we climbed the steps to the second floor and walked around. The view was great. Then we walked the steps to the third floor… someone wanted to take the lift (that’s the elevator for you yanks…), but we took the stairs… then we had to take the elevator to the third floor. It was windy and cold… we walked around, took pictures and enjoyed the view. Tag, Eiffel Tower, done! We cabbed it back to the hotel and napped for a bit… ok, several hours and then we went to the Latin quarter… oh, but wait, we were talking to a couple of girls from Boston college, sophomores… ok, what college sophomore can afford to go to Paris for spring break???? Anyway we were talking to them at every turn ov the line… you know one of those serpentine lines that wraps in on itself to the destination… anyway behind them were some other people. There were two women and two girls. Mom’s and their daughters… one of the mothers looks at us and tells us that they have college students too… ok, ok, we will talk to you too….???? After a bit it made sense. She thought that the first girls were our daughters, so she was looking to make friends for their kids… it was funny the way she said it though… hey we have college kids too, talk to us :> we did talk to them. I think they were going to school in Indiana. They told us how they went dancing in the Latin quarter until four in the morning and slept until two… that sounded good to us… so after the tower, Marlo wanted to go for a boat ride on the Seine. So we did. It was pretty good.
Now, little did we know, the bus tour that we booked actually included the Eiffel tower AND the boat tour, ooops, no biggy.
We went into a restaurant and they had a menu in English. Many places were closed and it was only midnight… we found a decent place and were intimidated by the pushy waiter… I ordered some snails and Marlo ordered the cheese plate, aren’t we such the Parisians :> the snails were good, they were in garlic and oil. Now what can be really bad soaking in garlic and oil… the bread was had and crusty. I asked for some fresh bread. Fortunately they understood enough English. Now it was 12:05 am. Marlo had been abstaining mostly for the last month or so. The month was up at 12:00 at 12:04 she had a glass of wine. She said that it was really good!… I waited until noon the next day, actually the same day to break my fast…
I think that was all we did that day… but like I said it is all starting to blur…
Monday…
I actually wrote down the plan for what we were going to do. it was getting confusing… I called it te clipboard of fun. Please comment of that sounds familiar :>
So Monday was bus tour day. We walked down to the bus office and got our tickets. It was 1:00 and the next tour was at 3:00. We waited. It just so happened (and it just so happened happens a lot to us) that the restaurant with the awesome hot chocolate was right down the way from the bus place. So we decided to have lunch there. Angelina, world famous for their hot chocolate and their desserts. We had both. We also had a lovely glass of champagne… that was also good. I had an omelets and Marlo had a club sandwich. They were both very good.
While we were standing in line, we struck up a conversation with the six foot woman behind us. It turns out that she is a fashion editor for Elle magazine and she is here for fashion week. Hello! Not only are we in Paris for fashion week, we and chatting it up with the editor from Elle… how cool are we :>
We sit down and the waiter was very nice and spoke excellent English! He did wink at me all of the time though… actually lots of Paris men winked at me… I am hoping that it is JUST a friendly gesture… as we are ordering food I look across the restaurant and spot Andy McDowell. At first I did not know if it was her. We had just see “Four Weddings and a Funeral” so I could recognize her. Now movie stars in real life do not have the advantage of all the makeup and the lighting so they look a little different. I was pretty sure it was her, but not positive… I had a clear view of her and I kept looking. Finally I could hear her across the restaurant. Now how I could pick her voice out over the din of the rest of the people I am not sure, but I could. It was her… such fun :> I watched her for a while and then Marlo and I decided to take a video of her somewhat discreetly. We had to do this for Mr. Jeffery Roller. She is #1 on his LIST… so we did. Of course se mocked him.. here we are, there she is and what not :>
After a lovely lunch with awesome hot chocolate and really good dessert we took the bus tour. We saw all the sights and they dropped us at the Eiffel tower. We ditched them and went back towards the hotel. We took a bus… we have now taken a place, a bus, a taxi, the metro and a bus… it dropped us by the arch. We attempted to go back to the hotel. We wandered a bit. We are in no hurry. We went into shops and what not.
They we happened on the James Joyce Irish pub. I wanted to go there since we got here. We tossed back an pint and chatted it up with the French bartender (he looked Irish) and an Irish couple who were waiting for a bus to the airport. We had a lovely conversation and totally enjoyed speaking to people we could understand…
We want back to the hotel and napped…. And it was a good thing too…
We were going to go to a club called Queen, but they would not let us in:< either because of the way we were dressed or we did not fit they target demographic… ok, we were not young and hip and gay… so we were going to do to the Duplex… whatever that was. But first we stopped in the phamancy, bar, jewelry store… yea, a little odd… while there I had absinthe. The bartender poured it over sugar and lit it on fire. It was a VERY strong liquorish taste. It was better after adding a little ice water.
At this odd place we met Benginin. He was a 40 something guy hanging out at his bar. He made tv movies about musicians. We told him about our experience with the Queen club and offered to take us to a spot he knew. Millionaire.. actually I think it was more like Mille on Airre or something, but it did not matter, it was closed… so we took a cab to a place over by Notre Dame, it was a basement club with some woman singing at the piano on the top floor… it was a little scary, but we had Ben, our guide. He had some months ago had a large party here so they remembered him. He made excuses for us. Something about taking two Americans… there was a band and a long wooden table. The singers would dance on the table along with some of the more adventourous patrons. People would even goo up on stage and dance with the very good dancing girls. Yes, I did both! Marlo was keeping Ben amused. I think that his night took a turn for the better when he met us. We amused him. And bought him drinks :> We did not get home until after 4:00 :> Paris was done right!
Tonight is a burlesque show at the crazy horse. But first we go to Notre Dame and St. Marie. It is 3:00 something, I have to go rouse Marlo and bring her to church :>
Ha, I am caught up…
