Everyone asks me… Did I have fun? Well I like to put it like this. If you ask a mountain climber after they get done spending weeks climbing a mountain, was it fun I am thinking that fun is not how they would describe it. I feel the same way. I had fun, but that much traveling is not easy or relaxing. It is an adventure. Something that I do not need to do again, but am really glad that I did. Next vacations will include two stops at the most and will be well planned out :>

After talking on Skype until 4:00am it was time to get some sleep… so I did. I woke to my alarm at 9:09 and threw some clothes on for breakfast. It is a typical hotel buffet breakfast… croissants, scrambled eggs, bad bacon, fruit, etc. the one thing that sets this breakfast apart is that they have dessert. I had cheese cake for breakfast yesterday.. hey, it is a dairy product :> After breakfast I went through the packing ritual. Throw the bag on the bed, gather all belongings, prepare to load… shower, pack and lastly turn off the computer. The computer is running almost all of the time providing English music for me.
I went to the desk to check out. Now I am usually really easy going about charges and costs, etc. BUT I knew I had to inflict my will when I checked in, so I made sure to look at the bill… Lo and behold the guy that gave me the 79e rate put it in the system and they were charging me 374e instead of 160e… hello!!! I had a suspicion that was going happen… after a bit of discussion and a queue building up they relented and gave it to me for the agreed upon rate… turns out it is cheaper to book though booking.com than to do it in real life… go figure…
I also checked out my trains for the day. One from Praha to Dresden Germany which is actually north. And then a second from Dresden to Frankfurt. I like Dresden because I read a series of books where that is the name of the main character… silly, I know. I even booked my hotel. I was very careful this time to get something close to the train station AND MUST HAVE AC! Many of them did not. I probably spent 22 minutes picking out the hotel… I really hope I picked a winner…
I stocked up on food and drink for the cross countries train tour and also made sure that I spent all of my krones… I did not get rid of them all, but almost.
My train to Dresden was 20 minutes late. This is the first delay that I have had to endure. Fortunately the train from Dresden to Frankfurt runs every hour so I will simply take the next one… gotta just roll with it…
First class is SO the way to go. Second class looks more like a cattle car and the dining car on this train looks like the ones in the movies… it’s about time :> I have been waiting for the movie-style dining car. No plugs on this train though… maybe in the dining car… I am pretty well charged up at his point, but hey, be prepared, it’s a long day and I need my phone to find my hotel when I get to Germany… I actually charged my phone off my laptop a couple of days ago. The phone is key for me!
I ate lunch and now it might just be nap time…
There is a screaming child on my train :< messin with my peace…
Catching up

Madrid 2010-07-19 – Really
Monday, July 19th, 2010Madrid 2010-07-19
First of all, happy birthday to my mother. I used Skype to call her on her cell phone. It was pretty clear considering I am on the other side of the ocean…
Madrid was HOT. I got up late and hung by the pool for a while. It was still 99 Fahrenheit for much of the day. It was all over the news (I think, it was in Spanish). I schlepped around some museums and cathedrals. None of them fell down when I walked in… not surprised, they have been around for a very long time. One cathedral you could walk all the way up the stairs to the pulpit. It was really pretty. There was even a priest hearing confessions. No I did not confess anything, first of all it would take too long and second, you are supposed to be sorry and not do those things again…
One very interesting thing about the hotels over here is that you need to keep the key in a slot in the wall in order for anything to work including the air conditioning. The hotel in Barcelona even turned off all of the outlets so my laptop did not charge :< I ended up getting a spare key. Also important note. The hotel keys have weak magnetic strips that can be easily reprogrammed for reuse. That is the good news. The bad news is that if you keep in in your money clip between two credit cards, it will cease to function. This happened twice so far… I got it now.
The room here is very nice, BUT, once again I situated myself way out of town. It takes a bus and a subway to get into civilization. I have to do it again tomorrow to get to the train.
Dinner was good. I had roasted suckling pig… hmmm.
So I spent at least an hour over lunch attempting how to complete my trip… it was a lot more complicated that one might thing. You see not every city connects to every other city, so it took some doing… so far we have Madrid=>Barcelona=>Bern, Switzerland=>Zurich, Austria=>Innsbruck=>Munchen, Germany=>Praha, Czek.
Now some of those spelling seem odd, but just to make things a little more complicated the Eurorail map is not completely English… I just booked two nights in Bern in the center of town!!! The description said it was 100 yards to my favorite place, the train station. There was one hotel that actually listed the number of steps to certain places including the train station… it was gone by the time I booked… AND this is the first time that I am going to need to change money… I need Swiss Francs. Hmmm. The good news is that the dollar is worth more. Still a pain.
So I have only figured things out to Prague, Czech. I think I will attempt to figure out the rest in Bern… it is tough… the Eurorail site is useless. I am forced to use the paper timetables and do it all manually. I have even resorted to pen and paper for now…
Ok, now I am going to watch Eureka on my laptop and least fancast does not block all non-us traffic!
